Kia ora and Welcome to Room 1!

My name is Kellie Mackey and I am the teacher this year in Room 1.  I have been teaching for 14 years now and came up to the North Island from Dunedin around 15 years ago.  I am married to Troy and we have three children.

For the last two years, I have worked as a Literacy Specialist and have decided it is time to return to the classroom.  I am loving it and the children in Room 1 are a truly awesome bunch.

I have also trained in Reading Recovery which is always helpful when it comes to teaching and have also undertaken Writing Acceleration work during the last two years - I am very passionate about lifting the levels of all children in the classroom and I look forward to working with you as Parents/Whanau and Caregivers to achieve this goal in all areas.

The children have settled in nicely and have been working on Co-operative Learning activities so that together as a class they can work together and support one another.  We have completed our Classroom Treaty and the children have been earning lots of "Gotchas" for their amazing behaviour/choices.  I have NO "Gotchas" left to give out at the end of the week!

Our Library visits will begin in week 3 and the children will be told when our Library day is.  Our visits to the pool vary from week to week, this week - the children will be swimming on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  Homework will be sent home in week 3, I will send a notice home in their Homework book so the children know what to do for Homework each night.

You are always welcome to come in and chat about your child, their happiness and learning is very important so if you need to make a time to see me, please send an email to kellie@awapuni.school.nz  and we can arrange a suitable time.  The door is always open!

Thank you for your support and you should be very proud of the start your children have made for the year.

  1. Dear Room 1,
it's great to see that Mrs Mackie is welcomed at Awapuni School and that you are melding together as a class of learners. Fancy running out of Gotchas in week 1! Good going Room 1!
